When we moved our family of five from over 2,500 sq ft to just 500, we faced some difficult challenges. Many involved too much stuff and finding peace in a tiny home.
The biggest challenge was finding space for all of our things we needed for everyday use.
Here are 6 space-saving tips for tiny house living.

When living in a tiny house, knowing how best to use your space is of the utmost importance. The less space you have to work with, the easier it is for it to look like a mess.
Despite the lack of square footage, it actually is quite easy to design spaces that are both functional and beautiful.
By creating thoughtful storage solutions, tiny homesteaders can make the most out of their tiny homes.
What Is A Tiny House?
Typically 500 square feet or less, tiny houses are all about simple living without sacrificing on quality.
These homes are hugely compatible with off-grid, mindful living, and can be built either on wheels or foundations.
Even an RV can be considered tiny house living.
There’s a wealth of information out there if you’re in the process of trying to decide which type of tiny house is best for you.
6 Ways You Can Save Space In A Tiny House
In addition to saving space, I’ve found a little organization helps living areas look larger.
We offer tips on how to organize your kitchen.
#1 Shelving & Creative Storage
There are potential storage spaces everywhere if you look hard enough.
Hallways and walls can be lined with shelving, while underfloor storage is also a great option as long as it’s easily accessible.
One rookie mistake that folks often make is by using regular furniture which takes up a lot of that much-needed floor space. Instead, hang decorative containers on the wall to add a little functional creativity.
Pro Tip: Secure the lids of mason jars to a strip of wood and hang it from the ceiling or over your stove. Your home-grown spices and other cooking goodies can be screwed in for a nice added touch.
#2 Folding Furniture Saves Space In A Tiny House
Think folding chairs, tables, etc. that can be easily stored and pulled out only when needed.
Another idea that is popular amongst tiny homeowners is the drop-down table.
A drop-down table can be mounted on a wall and then painted to create a piece of functional art (and possibly a great conversation starter!).
#3 Loft Beds Save Space In Tiny Houses
An excellent way to make the most of a small space is by building a loft in your tiny house or using risers to lift up your bed.
By including a loft, you gain almost an entire new floor of space to work with!
A bed on risers can also create some great space for storage underneath in pull out drawers or boxes.
We have our bed on risers in our master bedroom for this very reason.
#4 Ladders
Short of building a slide all the way to the bottom floor, a moveable ladder is a smart way to get to the loft without taking up too much floor area.
If you’re feeling adventurous and really want to cut down on “stuff,” secure rungs into the wall to really maximize on space!
#5 Sliding Doors
Did you ever consider how much room an open door takes up?
Adding a sliding door to your bathroom and front door not only looks good but also saves on that precious space.
An added bonus is a sliding door is less noisy than a traditional door–something very important in a tiny house!
#6 A Little Porch
Imagine sipping a hot cup of tea on the porch of your tiny house. Sounds pretty good, huh?
Porches/decks are the perfect way to make a small house seem less cramped, particularly when having friends over!
If you are considering a tiny house on wheels, you can even custom build a porch that folds upon the outer wall. Add a couple of folding chairs and you can enjoy the view!
The Take Away For Saving Space In Tiny House Living
Brainstorming ways to save space in a tiny home can be great fun if you’re willing to think a little out of the box.
Another great thing is that most of the mentioned space savers can be crafted with reclaimed materials and fairly limited know-how. (see how to save money on construction supplies)
Owning a tiny house is an exciting opportunity to live simply and really make the most of what’s available!

Great ideas! Love learning from others. I will definitely use some of those in our small off grid cabin. Thanks for sharing
